We're going to the Olympics!

18 April 2016

2016 has been a big year for us and its only April! We started off the year with a mammoth trip to America for 6 weeks, first up was training in Clearwater the 2016 worlds venue. Last time we went to Florida it was sunny and beautiful weather, I was not prepared for the temperature to be closer to England than we were used to. Freezing, numb hands and feet aside we had some great training in huge waves setting us up nicely for the Worlds in a few weeks time.

Before we reached the worlds however, we had a short road trip to Miami for the first world cup of the year. This venue couldn’t have been more different to Clearwater (apart from it still being cold!). Pan flat water makes the sailing style very different to Clearwater and Rio where we had been sailing recently. We rose to the challenge however and finished 6th. A few mistakes in the second half of the week cost us a few places but we finished the week on a high winning the medal race by a country mile.

This gave us great confidence going into the World Championships back in Clearwater. We had a little bit of everything during the worlds. Some huge days - 20-25knots and the waves to go with it, and few a slightly tamer at 8-10 knots. We sailed a solid week with a few mistake (one leading to a minor bump on our bow…) but we pulled out all the stops on the last day scoring a 1,1,3 and did everything we could in the medal race to climb up to 6th. We were really happy with this result after a very tough week and two major events back to back.

Our recent strong performances at the last few events meant that in March we were asked if we would be free in August to represent Team GB at the Olympic Games! We are unbelievably excited to represent our country at the Olympics, it’s dreams come true and a huge honour. Now the real work begins, working out how we are going to get ourselves on the podium this summer! We are back to training, after I sustained an injury during a pitch pole in Palma which, left me with a hand two times its normal size and purple. Thankfully nothing was broken so it recovered quickly. We are currently out in Rio getting to know the Olympic waters with our coach Maurice, 2016 is already a year to remember and we are working hard to make it even better!

Thank you for all of your support to get us this far.
